Gilbert Arenas, star guard of the Washington Wizards, was indefinitely suspended by the NBA yesterday in regards to his bringing in three handguns to the Washington Wizard practice facility this past week. What prompted the suspension however appears to be his cavalier response to reporters and his teammates during a huddle in a game two days ago. What is it about professional athletes regarding handguns? Didn't the Plaxico Burress incident bring to light the seriousness of how professional sport leagues and municipalities look upon this dangerous situation? Image is always an issue with professional sport leagues, that is why the teams put in moral clauses in the athletes contracts. Guns in our neighborhoods are a moral issue. 1 + 1 = 2. How is it that Arenas either didn't understand the seriousness of this problem or chose to ignore it? Burress lost his job and his freedom, and that was for shooting himself. Here is Arenas, who brings in not one, not two, but three handguns to a locker room and jokes with a teammate to choose one. What is perhaps even more unsettling is that the other player didn't have to select one of Arena's, but brandished one of his own from his locker. Is it any wonder the NBA is concerned. |
