Gilbert Arenas Indefinetly Suspended |
|
Thursday, 07 January 2010 |
|
Gilbert Arenas, star guard of the Washington Wizards, was indefinitely suspended by the NBA yesterday in regards to his bringing in three handguns to the Washington Wizard practice facility this past week. What prompted the suspension however appears to be his cavalier response to reporters and his teammates during a huddle in a game two days ago.
What is it about professional athletes regarding handguns? Didn't the Plaxico Burress incident bring to light the seriousness of how professional sport leagues and municipalities look upon this dangerous situation? Image is always an issue with professional sport leagues, that is why the teams put in moral clauses in the athletes contracts. Guns in our neighborhoods are a moral issue. 1 + 1 = 2. How is it that Arenas either didn't understand the seriousness of this problem or chose to ignore it?
Burress lost his job and his freedom, and that was for shooting himself. Here is Arenas, who brings in not one, not two, but three handguns to a locker room and jokes with a teammate to choose one. What is perhaps even more unsettling is that the other player didn't have to select one of Arena's, but brandished one of his own from his locker. Is it any wonder the NBA is concerned.

In a move they didn't want to make but had to save the face of the coach and the franchise, on Sunday, prior to what would become a record tying 17th straight season-opening loss, the N.J. Nets fired head coach Lawrence Frank. Snuday's loss to the World Champion Los Angeles Lakers tied them with the 1988-89 Miami Heat and the 1999 Los Angeles Clippers. They need to beat the Dallas Mavericks on Wednesday to avoid having the record all to themselves.
Frank was the franchise's winningest coach but was dealt serious injuries to his team to start the season and no longer have Vince Carter. The team is looking for a fulll time replacement though assistannt coach Tom Barrise took the reigns for the record tying loss.

Allen Iverson states that he wants to spend more time with his family and children. What he is really saying is that no one sees him as he sees himself, as a starting point guard that is a intregal part of the offense. How dare they! They all must be out of their minds, after all, I'm Allen Iverson.
Allen, sorry to tell you this, but its not that the league has forgetten who you are, its that you don't see who you've evolved into. Your body has taken years of beatings when you've penetrated to the basket, your attitude in the lockerroom is well noted, and quite frankly, you've lost a step. Add that up plus the fact that your price is a little high for teams looking to supplement their rotations at this point of the season, not looking for missing Answers, and well, enjoy retirement.
It's a shame when a great athlete has their ego get in the way of making financial decisions, for staying with Memphis was just that. Years from now that extra few million he just passed on for playing part time will be helpful. Oh, and for those of us struggling this season to purchase Christmas gifts, let alone pay bills, wish we had a chance to ride the bench for a quarter of what he just passed on.
Good luck Allen. You were great, and would have been greater if you could have checked the ego when you entered the arena.

In what can only be conisidered a moment of enlightenment, the Knicks passed on signing free agent Allen Iverson to a contract that would have put the controversial point guard at the helm of the team. While it is not publicly stated, there must have been some concern after President Donnie Walsh met with Iverson whether he would be a good influence on the young members and whether he would interfere with their development. While it was speculated that he would assist in putting bodies into empty seats at the Worlds Most Famous Arena, smarter heads did a 180 to what the Knicks have done in the pass - make the wrong decision for the wrong reasons.
We could go all the way back to the trade of Patrick Ewing to Seattle with only 1 year to go that would have cleared a mountain of cap room. Its been close to a decade of one bad decision after another, trying to right the ship. And while the Iverson signing would have no effect on next year's draft since it would be for only one year, the Knicks saw that for long erm development, the "Answer" was incorret for this question.

Knicks To Sign Allen Iverson |
|
Thursday, 19 November 2009 |
|
So what do you think is making more noise in New York today, the fact that the Knicks have won their second game or that they are about to sign Allen Iverson? It's Iverson. Is he a long term solution to the Knick's needs? Absolutely not. They know it and he knows it. But he will be playing center stage on Broadway with his name above the title. The Knick's get the chance to fill in some of those empty seats while they play out the string (yes, we'll all waiting for the free agent signing period of next summer). Will Iverson actually make people purchase tickets to the Garden? We'll see. But is it a good basketball move? Well, when was the last time the Knicks made a good basketball move? Let's hope this is the beginning of the good moves. No one, and we mean no one, is rooting harder for Donnie Walsh and the Knick's than Game Over. If Iverson gives the Knicks anything, including some experience to the younger Knick's while filling seats, than its worth the gamble on a player that has been considered a problem child.

Perhaps the biggest surprise, though not to himself, is the play of rookie Brandon Jennings, a rookie that didn't come to the NBA by either of the accepted past routes of either the NCAA or from High School. Instead, the non-qualifier (couldn't reach the required scores on the college standardize tests such as the SAT) had to go to Europe to play when he couldn't get into Arizona. Not wanting to go to Junior College, he decided, on the advise of Sonny Vaccaro, went to Greece to play for a year since the NB won't draft high school players. To say that he did not do well in Europe would be an understatement. To be drafted in the top ten of the NBA Draft this past June either speaks volumes on the desperation of teams to find some type of talent in a poorly stocked draft or that the Bucks did a superior job in scouting Jennings. The Knicks, in desperate need of a point guard, passed on him with the 8th selection and took Jordan Hill (jury will be out on Hill for the season). However, Jennings is making an immediate impact on the Bucks, scoring 55 points the other night. Could the Knicks use that? What does it say when they are contemplating picking up a 34 year old Allen Iverson? Enough said.
