Jerry Tarkanian says about Lewis, "He was phenomenal, absolutely phenomenal. I followed him throughout high school. He had more God-given talent than anybody. "You can take the five best defensive players in the NBA and they couldn't stop this kid".
"Raymond would play all our players one-on-one and kill ‘em and half of them were All Americans." he said. "He was as fast as Allen Iverson, only taller, bigger and stronger, I kid you not, he could handle the ball like you couldn't believe, just make the ball disappear."
I never saw anyone guard him one-on-one. I never saw anyone contain him. I never saw anyone stop his dribble penetration. In a college game once, he scored 73 points. I was mesmorized by his ability and I just couldn't believe it." In his novel 2005 novel Runnin' Rebel Tark proclaimed Raymond Lewis as "The Greatest Player I Ever Saw."

Speaking of Urban Legends; what about Jay "Boogie" Brantley, former Los Angeles All-City Player, UNLV, East Coast and West Coast legend. Marques Haynes (Harlem Globetrotter great) knows what Jay Boogie can do with the ball. Plus, when he shoots the rock, he is money! Take-it-to-the-bank! At the moment he and his Hooptainer team are spreading goodwill on his Jay Boogie tour in Brazil. Regards, Dan the Man

I saw Raymond Lewis (former Cal State Los Angeles, Philadelphia 76er No. 1 draft choice circa 1973, and West Coast Streetball Legend) score 49 points while he was a high school senior against the Los Angeles Lakers Summer League team which included Jerry Chambers former Utah great and Jim McMillan of 33 straight win streak fame. Best Shooter EVER! 35-foot layups! Jerry Tarkanian (UNLV) said he was the best player he ever saw. No one could contain him or stop his dribble penetration. Check him out and East Coast Legend James "Fly" Williams along with Wilt at myspace.com and type in actordantheladiesman. Then click on pics. Enjoy ! - Dan the Man

OB Colon - October 12, 2007 |

Hey Bobbito, you guys should ask Fly, World, 90, Phil the Thrill and Jocko about a Hispanic Brownsville Ball player by the name of OB. He had a 15 foot hook shot, behind the back backboard shot, over the head and behind the back shot, backwards shot from the foul line, between the leg lay-up and some real sick passes. When he walked on the court at the Howard Houses they whistled the circus theme. Let me know what you guys find out. By the way he is 59 and still can get that stuff off. - Thanks, his son Brandon

OB Colon - October 4, 2007 |

My name is Brandon Doctor Colon. I am 12 years old. My dad played with and against World, Fly. Jocko, Phil, the King brothers and many others. My dad is never mentioned as a street legend. I like to know why. My dad beat FLY one-on-one by 1 point in the late ‘70s. He also beat World one-on-one. This I know because my dad told me, and he has written proof. Also when I met Fly last year, Fly himself told me so in front of Jocko. Fly also said my dad beat World one-on-one too, and Jocko added "well he did not win against me". Where upon my dad hugged him and said "this is true". They told me my dad won because he had an unstoppable hook shot. This conversation took place at old-timers day at the BRC. My dad still coaches at a place which is called the BRC in Florida. Guess he just can't get away from the ‘Ville. By the way my dad tells me there was another P.R. player name 90, who was a very good player for Thomas Jefferson H.S. My dads name is OB Colon, a.k.a. Obsure. He is 59 now but still plays and still makes that hook shot & bunch of trick shots. See what you guys can dig up. Thanks for your time. - Brandon a.k.a. Doc

Need help searching for legends - September 11, 2007 |

I am from Boston, Mass and starting in 1972 we started a high school all-star tourney called the Boston Shootouts, with teams reping cities across the country. However, since the beginning Boston fans were fascinated with the playground style of the NYC contingent, every year, starting with Phil "the Thrill " Sellers '72, Bernard King '74, Albert King' 77, Chris Mullin, Pearl and Beetle Washington, Rod McCray, Red Bruin, Richie Adams, Ed Pinckney, and Walter Berry to name a few.
The aforementioned were recognized stars, but there were other players who flew under the radar who were just as nice and left memorable impressions, and I am wondering what happened to them, like: Raschid "Shake and Bake" Walker '73, Carl "Sun Dance" Rand '73, Tyrone McKelvey, Craig Pendergrass '77, Tyrone Davis '74 and Nigel Wallace '81.
If you have seen their face on milk cartons please report them to me: Sir Funkalot
Their information is needed to complete my research for a book covering the Boston Shootouts and some of the estranged but entertaining basketball maverick participants.
Holla back, if you know or give a reference for somebody to communicate with that might know. - Lemuel Mills

Lamont Martinez - June 10, 2007 |
|

The baddest cat I've ever saw with a basketball was this kid named Lamont Martinez. He played for DeWitt Clinton High School in the Bronx (1985-1987). He was about 6'3 and can jump out of the gym. I saw this cat bang it on this 7 footer three times in one game. His jumper was deadly. I saw him hit 9 3-pointers in a row. His handle was sick. I wonder what happen to that cat. Last I heard he dropped out of high school but went back and eventually got his Master's degree years later. I'm not knocking his education but why let basketball skills like that go to waste! - yasminedeetjen
