Lefty from Baltimore - July 16, 2006
Wednesday, 23 January 2008

I know this guy from Baltimore named Lefty who once scored 45 on John Stockton in a b-ball tourney in 1983 while Stockton was at Gonzaga.  I didn't believe it until his wedding day when his boys from the army retold the story the same way he did.  This man also taught Juan Dixon how to shoot.  -  anonymous

The Black Stallion - July 12, 2006
Wednesday, 23 January 2008

I got a one for you.  He never played in any of the streetball tournaments.  Not because he couldn't but because he didn't want too.  His main partner was D-Black a.k.a. THE BLACK STALLION.  He was about 5'9" and could jump out the gym.  His handle was crazy and his passes were ridiculous.  He grew up in the Bronx.  I wanted to be like this brother so bad.  I just wanted to shout him out.  So Fred a.k.a. Fred Ice big up to you.  You are definitely one who I looked up to.  - Butta

Mike Campbell / Leon - July 12, 2006
Wednesday, 23 January 2008

1996, Lower East Side, The Cage Tournament on East Broadway. Two the Hole, Inc. versus a crew from the L.E.S.  The crew from the L.E.S. has a stacked crew of cats from the L.E.S., one of which is the actor Leon (5 Heartbeats, Above the Rim, Waiting to Exhale, etc...)  Cats don't remember that he can really ball, played college ball at LMU out in Cali in the 80's.  Well he got matched up against Mike Campbell (Nike Battlegrounds champ ‘03).  Mike is playing a humble game, just making jump shots, nothing too aggressive.  Leon got the battery put in his back cause some chicks on the sideline recognized him and started cheering for him.  So now he's really trying to go at Mike.  Two the Hole, Inc.'s offense was always ISO's and high screens cause there was always a mismatch, and in this case, Leon was the "weakest link".  Two the Hole, Inc., ran about 8 ISO plays in a row at Leon, each one thru Mike Campbell.  Leon's team told him that Mike couldn't dribble, so just over play him so he can't get his jumps hot off.  Foolish mortals. Mike got a yoyo for a handle, so he starts blending Leon damn near every trip.  It started to look like a kid against a grown man, in favor of Mike Campbell. After about 5 buckets in a row, the bench for Two the Hole, Inc. started singing "I've got nothing but love for you" (song made famous from the movie "The 5 Heatbeats" in which Leon had a starring role!)  Hilarious!!  -   Twotheholeinc, Brooklyn, New York

Boogs - July 12, 2006
Wednesday, 23 January 2008

1996, Tillary Park, Kenny's Kings versus some other crew.  It's a 12 o'clock game in July, and those of us familiar with Tillary know that that is the perfect place to catch a heatstroke cause there are no trees or breeze, just straight heat.  Yet the park is packed cause Kenny' Kings is playing and the leading performer was Boogs.  The other crew weren't slouches, but their featured player was Timothy Gittens a.k.a. Headache. Headache arrived late to the game, so he didn't start, but as soon as he comes into the game, his team starts yelling, telling him to bust Boogs ass, he ain't nobody, etc,, etc. Boogs got angry and started talking shit back to the bench, totally disregarding Headache,  Boog's is telling them watch what I do to your man, watch!  First trip up the court, Headache tries to hit Boogs with an in and out, Boogs rips him and makes the pass for an uncontested lay-up by Seldon Jefferson (West Virginia).  The next trip Headache tries it again, but I guess he was thinking too much cause he lost the ball off of his foot.  The crowd is starting to heckle Headache now, not only was he talking noise, but he's talking noise to Boogs who lived 3 blocks from Tillary!  So now Boogs is starting to pick him apart, shaking him up, ripping him, deflecting his passes, totally destroying this dude, so the other crew decides that they're going to press, bad move.  Boogs beats the press single handedly but instead of going for the lay-up, he pulls the ball out to wait for who else, Headache.  Headache starts to defend him while Boogs is dribbling.  Boogs fakes a pass behind Headaches back, then cuffs the ball into his palm and places the ball in between his shoulder blades so it looks like he actually made the pass because the ball isn't in his hands.  Headache is totally confused, so he turns towards his team to see where the ball is, the crowd went ballistic!  Boogs drops the ball from between his shoulder blades and throws an alley-oop to Braheen Cotton (Beezo) for a dunk on the baseline.  This all occurred in the first half of the game, and the only reason I make it a point to mention that is because your man Headache chumped out and left before the second half started, talking bout he couldn't get a fair game at Tillary and that the refs were cheating for Boogs. Yeah, we know.....  -  Twotheholeinc, Brooklyn, New York

Ted Gustus - July 11, 2006
Wednesday, 23 January 2008

I've seen one of the best voices to come out of Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn give up singing to become one of the best coaches in the nation Ted Gustus.  -  dstreet2, St. Stephen, SC

Vinnie Johnson / Sam Worthen - July 3, 2006
Wednesday, 23 January 2008

Played and saw a lot of ball in Bklyn-Queens in the 60's and 70's.  Vinnie Johnson and Sam Worthen were the best I played against.  They wouldn't remember me but I sure remember them.  Vinnie was a man among boys and Sam would beat you by himself, and looked like he wasn't even trying.  My dad coached those Stretch Graham' Lafayette teams, I remember that Mitch Atwood dunk.  A few great players I didn't see mentioned - Butch Lee, Lymbert "Cheese" Johnson, World B's sidekick O'Neill Tarrant (first guy I ever saw give that over the head ball fake before knocking down a 20 footer, defender was totally turned around, Brooklyn championships, early 70's, Greg McNair from Jackson was very good, he had those AI moves way back, Vinny Fuller, before his knee problems, was like the original Skip, had the ball on a string and could run past and around everyone.  Great website!!!!!  -  gfershtman, Long Island, NY

Fo Jo - July 2, 2006
Wednesday, 23 January 2008

A young ball player from the High Bridge Projects in the Bronx, N.Y. played with the Tally Trotters.  Eventually made the Dewitt Clinton, H.S. team and was sought by the Chicago Bulls while still in the 11th grade.  Fo Jo was his name, a kid with big hands, ill handle and crazy hops.  Fo once broke his arm dunking as he adjusted his leap over a 6'5" defender.  Fo returned to the court shortly next week with a hard cast and it was business as usual dunking on brothers and sticking his whole arm in the rim as you all witnessed Vince Carter do.  Fo used to do that on people and he was only 6' tall!  I saw Fo humiliate Ernie Myers and win MVP at La Guardia House on 116st.  He played with Walter Berry, Cornbread, Troy Truesdale, Kelly and them boys from uptown on Nelson Avenue.  I was his big brother from Harlem he called Johnny Roll!  A high jumpin' maniac myself!  -  J. Scott, Atlanta, GA

Cory Canteen - June 27, 2006
Wednesday, 23 January 2008

His name is Cory Canteen.  His job was to just play ball.  Cory played high school basketball at Samuel Gompers H.S. in the Bronx.  Cory's name is along side some of the best names in basketball.  In 1998 he was previewed in Street & Smith's basketball book.   That year he was a H.S. All-American.  One day at Fat Joe's basketball tournament up in the Bronx, Cory scored 49 points in the second half after leaving another game in which he had 29 in that game in the first half, against some of the best name's in college basketball.  This was truly one of the best games I have ever seen, put on by one person.  -  Barney, NY, NY

The Dancing Doogie - June 3, 2006
Wednesday, 23 January 2008

Let's not forget the great Harlem Legend "The Dancing One" (The Dancing Doogie).  I saw him shake a kid so hard he just fell and did not get up.  -  hurley419
